Lewis Hamilton faces Ferrari challenges reminiscent of Fernando Alonso’s warnings
More than a decade has passed since Fernando Alonso decided to leave Ferrari, citing his belief that the Scuderia was not in a position to consistently compete for Formula 1 world championships. At the time, many questioned his decision, especially as Sebastian Vettel seemed to flourish at Ferrari, securing wins on just his second race and challenging for the title in subsequent seasons.
However, Vettel’s near-title campaigns highlighted an enduring problem within Ferrari: the team has repeatedly struggled to maintain championship momentum through crucial periods. Even when Charles Leclerc showcased his talent in 2022, operational errors and car reliability issues allowed Max Verstappen and Red Bull to dominate, reinforcing the long-standing limitations that Alonso had previously identified.
Lewis Hamilton attempting to build a championship blueprint at Ferrari
Now, with Lewis Hamilton joining Ferrari, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion has been trying to implement a winning framework within the team. Sources suggest the Briton has been meticulously reviewing Ferrari’s weaknesses and compiling detailed feedback reports. However, according to F1 journalist Ted Kravitz, these insights may not be fully embraced by the team.
Ted Kravitz highlighted that Ferrari’s challenges are not new, pointing out that multiple world-class drivers over the years, including Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel, have encountered similar systemic issues. He explained that despite Lewis Hamilton producing what could be considered a comprehensive championship blueprint, Ferrari continues to struggle with internal resistance and organizational inertia, preventing them from functioning at the level of Mercedes or Red Bull.
Looking back, Alonso had left Ferrari in 2014 because he observed that the team was falling short in areas that defined championship-winning squads. Sebastian Vettel then experienced a mixture of successes and setbacks, while Charles Leclerc has recently shown flashes of brilliance. Yet, as Ted Kravitz notes, the core issues within Ferrari have remained consistent for nearly a decade, reinforcing Alonso’s early assessment.
Fred Vasseur’s future tied to Hamilton’s Ferrari tenure
Earlier this season, Lewis Hamilton publicly supported Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur, whose position had been questioned in the media. The former Alfa Romeo team boss, who previously worked with Lewis Hamilton in the junior categories, played a crucial role in bringing the seven-time world champion from Mercedes to Ferrari.
According to reports, the fates of Lewis Hamilton and Fred Vasseur are closely linked. While it is unlikely they would leave simultaneously, it is suggested that the French manager could depart within weeks or months if Lewis Hamilton were to exit Ferrari, even though he recently signed a new contract. This interdependency emphasizes how integral Hamilton is to the team’s leadership and strategic direction.
The seven-time Formula 1 world champion’s current Ferrari contract runs until the end of 2027. Despite visible frustrations and the team’s ongoing struggles, it is expected that he will remain for the full term before making any decisions about his future in Formula 1.
Longstanding Ferrari challenges remain evident
Lewis Hamilton’s experiences at Ferrari underline a recurring theme: the Scuderia has struggled to consistently translate driver talent into championship-winning performance. From Alonso’s early warnings to Vettel’s near-misses, Charles Leclerc’s rise, and now Lewis Hamilton’s attempts to create a structured path to victory, the pattern is clear. Without addressing these systemic problems, Ferrari risks repeating a cycle of unfulfilled potential, no matter how strong the driver lineup may be.
