About one year ago all of Italy and most of the world were still in lockdown. Sport and above all Formula 1 was struggling with the reorganization and preparation for the restart of the championships (which in the case of Formula 1 took place in July).
There were still two months left until the start of the season when the unexpected news arrived from Scuderia Ferrari: Sebastian Vettel would no longer wear the red colors in 2021 and that the Spaniard Carlos Sainz from McLaren would arrive in his place at the end of the 2020 Formula One season.
The relationship between the Italian side’s team principal Mattia Binotto and the four-time Formula 1 world champion has never been idyllic, with the German being a driver strongly desired by Sergio Marchionne. With Carlos Sainz, on the other hand, he seems to have created an excellent bond right from the start. It is true, we have only seen the first two races, but the choice of the Spaniard seems to agree with the Italian engineer.
Among the drivers who have changed teams, Carlos is the most convincing and the numbers prove: with 14 points won in Bahrain and Imola he is the best placed with this status, together with Daniel Ricciardo (the Spaniard is however ahead in the general standings thanks to a better placement in the last race); ahead of Sergio Perez who drives a Red Bull and clearly better than Sebastian Vettel, still at zero points with his AMR21.
Some errors seen on Sunday during the Made in Italy and Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix show that the Spanish driver still has to get to know the car better, especially in conditions of poor grip such as the early stages of the Imola race. Lap after lap he became familiar with the car and with the improvement of the track he significantly increased his performance, taking the checkered flag just 1 ”5 behind his teammate Charles Leclerc.
The new Scuderia Ferrari line-up looks fit and very promising. With a SF21 car like the one seen at Imola, the Maranello team can hope for a few podium finishes in the current season.
