The consequences of the incident involving Charles Leclerc during the final qualifying session at Zandvoort have been much more significant than initially speculated.
Despite the impact with the barriers occurring at a relatively low speed, the angle of the impact was not favorable, damaging both the chassis and the gearbox. After a thorough analysis conducted by the Scuderia’s technicians in the late afternoon, it became apparent that both components needed to be replaced.
For the Maranello team, this represents a considerable amount of extra work, especially considering that after the FP3 session, it was already necessary to replace the power unit (also on Charles Leclerc’s car) due to certain parameters indicating a potential risk to the engine’s durability.
There will be no grid penalties to be served since the gearbox will be replaced with one that has been used in previous races, just as was the case with the power unit. The team remains hopeful of recovering the power unit despite the replacements.
