Besides Charles Leclerc, Scuderia Ferrari has had drivers who, despite not winning the Formula 1 world title with the Italian side, significantly contributed to the popularity of the Maranello team. We are talking about Clay Regazzoni, Gilles Villeneuve, Jean Alesi, and many others. These individuals were able to establish a special connection with the fans of the historic Italian team thanks to their courage and sense of belonging. Qualities that made on-track successes almost secondary. Charles Leclerc is undoubtedly the most beloved driver of Ferrari’s recent past and the reason is quite simple.
Beyond his extraordinary talent, the Monegasque driver embodies what fans desire from their favorites, namely the desire to push the car beyond its limits, giving his all and trying to maximize the result even in difficult conditions. In this sense, the difference in the fans’ enthusiasm towards Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz is evident, even though the Spaniard has not looked bad compared to his Maranello teammate in terms of on-track results and performance during the four years spent together. After all, Ferrari has been Charles Leclerc’s second home since he joined the Driver Academy almost one decade ago, in 2016, the same year he also became a Haas test driver. Recently, the Monegasque driver spoke about various professional goals with one exception: winning the Formula 1 world title.
A goal that would need to be postponed once again, as after a solid start to the 2024 Formula 1 championship, highlighted by the victory secured on the streets of Monte Carlo in the Monaco Grand Prix, there has been a long slump that significantly distanced him from the top of the drivers’ standings. The Monegasque driver acknowledged that they were not yet where they wanted to be in terms of performance but emphasized that the Maranello team was working very hard. He expressed confidence in the bright future of the team and their efforts, though he wished they had a winning car given the current situation, especially considering that Red Bull is no longer as dominant as it has been in the last years, but Ferrari is not able to capitalize on their vulnerabilities, falling behind rivals McLaren and Mercedes, who battled for the race victories in the last few rounds of the 2024 Formula 1 championship.
Unfortunately, this recurring theme had characterized his experience with the Italian team for several years now. However, contrary to what one might expect, Charles Leclerc did not give up and reaffirmed his next goal, stating that his target with Ferrari was to become F1 world champion, and that was all he wanted. The Monegasque emphasized that he only wanted to achieve this with Ferrari and was focused solely on that goal. This statement reflected his determination and deep love for the red team, resonating with the fans of the Prancing Horse.
Next year, a living Formula 1 legend, Lewis Hamilton, will join Ferrari, having been lured away from his long tenure at Mercedes by the allure and charm of the Maranello team. On paper, the hiring of the seven-time Formula 1 world champion challenges Charles Leclerc’s central role within the team. However, the Monegasque driver understands perfectly that competing against the driver who has rewritten all the records in the most important motorsport category can only enhance his reputation, both within and outside the Maranello team.
In a recent interview Charles Leclerc mentioned that it would be a great opportunity to learn from one of the best ever. He also believed it would be an incredible chance for him to demonstrate his capabilities, expressing his eagerness for the upcoming challenge starting with the 2025 F1 campaign. This perspective reinforced the idea that competition with Lewis would only further certify his own value. At the same time, the Monegasque driver noted that other drivers might have viewed the arrival of seven-time Formula 1 world champion as a sign of the Maranello team’s lack of confidence towards him.
Charles Leclerc, however, pragmatically believes that beating Lewis Hamilton is a necessary step towards achieving the most coveted goal: that world championship crown, which, after seven years in the top category, is starting to become a kind of obsession. The Italian side must prove capable of managing “two roosters in the henhouse,” as it is evident that the seven-time world champion did not come to Ferrari to “twiddle his thumbs.” At the same time, the hefty salary paid by the team to the English driver represents an investment aimed at sporting success.
All of this is also considering that this operation, carried out directly by President John Elkann himself, undoubtedly has a foreseeable economic return linked to the union of two Formula 1 legends. Charles Leclerc is aware that he will have the most formidable teammate of his career alongside him. This aspect, however, does not destabilize him at all at the moment; on the contrary, it seems to offer him greater motivation, as he awaits the car to match the talent that the future duo of drivers from the historic Italian team will undoubtedly display.
