We imagined Lewis Hamilton’s first season at Ferrari would look very different. Instead, what emerges after nine races is the portrait of a seven-time world champion who appears tired and downcast.
In Spain, car #44 had qualified fifth and crossed the finish line in sixth position, overtaken in the final stages by a brilliant Nico Hulkenberg in the Sauber. Things went better for his teammate: starting seventh, Charles Leclerc finished on the podium in third place.
The Briton’s performance was inexplicable, though he told the media the car “just wasn’t working.” After a decidedly poor weekend, Hamilton is already looking ahead to the next race in Canada in two weeks’ time: “Let’s hope that in that race the corners and the weekend dynamic go back in our favour,” he told the media after the Spanish Grand Prix.
Head down and back to work for the Montréal round, concluded the multiple world champion. Yet, an unusual on-board video from Hamilton’s Ferrari continues to draw attention.
After the race, car #44 is in parc fermé, but before getting out, he stays seated for several seconds, continuously shaking his head. The video has been circulating on social media for several hours and truly highlights Hamilton’s reaction, as he appears disheartened and dejected, almost as if he can’t understand why he is unable to unlock his potential with this SF-25.
