Ferrari is growing compared to last year. It is there for all to see. Even if, objectively, repeating the same results or even doing worse than 2020 would have been really difficult. However, credit must be given to Ferrari which has started working as a team again, all united towards one goal. Ok, the current season is important for the conquest of third place among the Constructors’ standings, even if it would not represent a great achievement for the Maranello team, considering the legend that it carries in the name of the brand.
But most of the efforts have focused on 2022, by the Ferrari insiders’ own admission. A fundamental year, of strong regulatory change. A Formula 1 season that will influence the subsequent ones with a domino effect. If Ferrari work well then the chances of opening that winning cycle so much invoked by Team Principal Mattia Binotto will be concrete. If it works badly, the consequences could be catastrophic and long-term.
In this sense, there is an immediate hitch, the severity of which can only be measured starting next year: the delay in the construction of the new simulator. As already reported by Alberto Antonini on FormulaPassion, Charles Leclerc admitted to having tested the car in the 2022 configuration, but without specifying with which simulator. Probably the two drivers, given that Carlos Sainz should have tried it too, got on board the “Spider”, a reliable simulator yes, but which is beginning to be very outdated.
The new one should have been ready by now, but it is not. And time is running out. Also considering how much the other teams are racing to be in the best conditions at the starting blocks next year. Which would then be for the next three years. In short, something that can be solved by increasing the pace of work, but which would have been better avoided in order not to risk going into confusion. And not to begin with a handicap even before starting the engines. This time Ferrari cannot afford to miss anything. But, to quote Chef Borghese, this is not a good start.
