Lewis Hamilton has received overwhelming backing as the driver most capable of challenging Kimi Antonelli for the 2026 Formula 1 world championship. The Ferrari driver secured more than 63 per cent of the vote in a fan poll assessing the greatest threat to the Mercedes leader.
Kimi Antonelli has enjoyed an outstanding first half of the season, establishing a 50-point advantage at the top of the Formula 1 driver standings. Despite that substantial margin, respondents believe Hamilton is significantly more likely to close the gap than George Russell, Max Verstappen, Lando Norris or Charles Leclerc.
Lewis Hamilton dominates F1 title threat poll
RacingNews365 asked fans to identify Antonelli’s biggest championship rival, and the result was emphatic. Lewis Hamilton collected 63.18 per cent of the vote, giving the seven-time world champion a commanding advantage over every other option.
George Russell, Antonelli’s Mercedes team-mate, finished a distant second on 13.39 per cent. Lando Norris received 10.88 per cent, narrowly beating Max Verstappen’s 10.04 per cent, while 1.67 per cent selected another driver.
Charles Leclerc attracted just 0.84 per cent of the vote. Although both Ferrari drivers remain involved in the championship, Hamilton’s stronger position has already prompted discussion about whether Ferrari may eventually need to consider team orders during the second half of the campaign.
Who is Kimi Antonelli’s biggest F1 title threat?
- Lewis Hamilton: 63.18%
- George Russell: 13.39%
- Lando Norris: 10.88%
- Max Verstappen: 10.04%
- Someone else: 1.67%
- Charles Leclerc: 0.84%
Why fans believe Hamilton can challenge Antonelli
The poll result reflects confidence in Hamilton’s ability to mount a serious championship challenge at the age of 41. His performances with the SF-26 have been considerably stronger than during his difficult first season at Maranello, allowing him to remain firmly in contention heading into the second half of 2026.
Lewis Hamilton has not been involved in a Formula 1 title fight since 2021, but his consistency this year has placed him in position to pressure Antonelli. The scale of his support in the vote also suggests that fans continue to place considerable value on the Briton’s pace, experience and racecraft.
Overturning the deficit will nevertheless require both driver and team to maximise their opportunities. An assessment of the points Hamilton has lost during Ferrari’s 2026 title campaign illustrates how penalties, incidents and execution problems have made his task more difficult.
The Scuderia’s development programme could also influence the championship picture. Ferrari must continue improving the SF-26 and delivering effective updates if Hamilton is to reduce Antonelli’s lead across the remaining races. Team principal Frédéric Vasseur has acknowledged the progress made during the opening 11 Grands Prix, but his mid-season assessment of Ferrari’s campaign also emphasised that the results achieved so far were insufficient.
The fan vote cannot determine how the championship will unfold, but it delivers a clear verdict on the identity of Kimi Antonelli’s most credible challenger. Lewis Hamilton received almost five times as much support as George Russell, leaving no doubt that respondents regard the Ferrari driver as the central threat to Mercedes’ current advantage.
