It’s been claimed that the sport is set to change its scoring system by giving a point to the driver who sets the fastest lap in a Grand Prix.
It’s believed the move is an attempt to make F1 more appealing and increase audiences. F1 chiefs discussed the idea after fans gave it as a proposal that might add extra interest to races
But not all supporters are convinced it’s a good idea, likening the sport to computer games.
One suggested on social media: “They should load the track with bananas, shells and infinity stars and race it like Mario Kart.” While another raged: “Another thing being forced on the fans that no one wanted. It’s a adults sport not a sport for children. Do they also receive a fastest lap sticker and a photo with their parents.”
A third simply said: “What an awful idea.”
While one user commented: “They should start awarding points for having a nice hairstyle too. I’ve always appreciated how in order to score a point in Formula 1 you had to EARN it by finishing ahead of as many people as you can. Breaking a points drought was hugely significant. Now this changes EVERYTHING.”
And a fifth posted: “Formula one is turning into a gimic.”
