On Monday, April 13, a key online meeting took place involving Formula 1 drivers, the FIA and Formula One Management (FOM), with the primary objective of discussing potential changes to the 2026 technical regulations. According to reports from GPBlog, the virtual session was attended by several leading figures in the paddock, including GPDA chairman George Russell and reigning world champion Max Verstappen. The meeting was described as “positive and productive,” signaling a constructive dialogue between the sport’s stakeholders.
In recent months, Formula 1 drivers have repeatedly expressed their desire to be more actively involved in the decision-making process, particularly when it comes to major regulatory changes that directly impact car performance and racing dynamics. As previously outlined, the FIA is aiming to build as much consensus as possible around the proposals it intends to introduce, with some measures potentially set to debut as early as the Miami Grand Prix.
Stefano Domenicali: “Max Verstappen contributed many suggestions”
In an interview published today by Autosport, Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali confirmed the details surrounding the meeting and emphasized Max Verstappen’s proactive role in the discussions: “With Max, we have spoken many, many times since the beginning. So I understand his comments, and he understands the bigger picture. Even today, there was a meeting where he was very eager to provide suggestions.”
Addressing Verstappen’s broader interests and recent comments, Stefano Domenicali added: “Racing in GT3? I mean, of course those races have a balance of performance. I do not want to fall into the trap of creating antagonism because that is not who I am, and it is not how we want to approach things.”
There appears to be no tension between Formula 1 leadership and the Dutch driver. “We are talking about the best driver, a multiple world champion. And of course, his voice must be heard. Naturally, his voice carries weight, and he must respect the fact that some people may misunderstand. And we must not allow that to happen,” Stefano Domenicali concluded.
The “positive” outcome of this meeting suggests that the FIA is finally taking the drivers’ concerns regarding energy management and car weight seriously. Having Max Verstappen actively providing suggestions, rather than just criticizing from the sidelines, indicates that the reigning champion is invested in making the 2026 era work, despite his initial skepticism.
