There were many new features that debuted in the double-header that took place in Florida and Azerbaijan, with half of the teams bringing a new floor.
The third and fourth races of the season were certainly intense from a technical standpoint. As expected after the one-month break, all teams brought their own aerodynamic updates, more or less substantial. For some, like Red Bull, it was a natural development process, while for others like McLaren, the changes profoundly redesigned the cars. Others, like Mercedes, instead limited themselves to small modifications, waiting for more substantial packages to arrive at Imola or the Circuit de Catalunya-Barcelona.
Updates in Baku and Miami
Red Bull only brought updates to Baku, where they raised the areas of the sidepods to improve the management of the flows that run along the lower bodywork. Ferrari introduced a significant update to the floor in Miami, redesigning the geometry of the Venturi tunnels, but mechanical setup issues prevented a full evaluation of its effectiveness. There were major updates at McLaren, with a completely revised underbody, but it was not enough to address the serious aerodynamic efficiency shortcomings of the MCL60 single-seater.
AlphaTauri had extensively modified the AT04 in Australia in the area of the floor. The Baku and Miami races were an opportunity to refine all other areas of the car, especially the wings, engine cover, and mirrors. Among the teams that brought a new floor, Alpine and Haas stood out, with the latter performing particularly well in the Florida race. Alfa Romeo enriched their low-downforce package by developing a new beam wing and rear wing, while Williams treated introduced a new lower nosecone. Here is a summary of all the aerodynamic updates introduced since the beginning of the 2023 Formula 1 campaign:
