During the Australian GP, the opening event of the 2026 Formula 1 season, the Sky Sport F1 team revealed a piece of data from inside the Melbourne paddock hinting at the extreme development curve we might witness this year.
A steep curve, in fact, an incredibly steep one. According to sources gathered yesterday, some engineers speculate that there is so much room for improvement that in just one season, a team could potentially make a 5-second step forward. A figure that seems like science fiction compared to previous seasons.
Generally, in past years, a team could already claim to have done a good job if, over the course of the championship, the car showed an improvement of around 1 second by the end of the season. Now, we are talking about 5 seconds. It’s worth noting that this data shouldn’t be taken as absolute truth—only one race has passed, and we still need to filter and verify all the information coming in.
Opportunities for teams and hope for fans
A 5-second leap is truly extraordinary, but even if the full 5 seconds isn’t realistic, even a gain of 2 or 2.5 seconds compared to the current pace would still be a staggering improvement. Such a massive step could also shake up the current hierarchical order in F1.
This is where the opportunity lies. Imagine a top team among Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull making one or two mistakes in their upgrades, while teams like VCARB, Audi, and Haas manage to align perfectly with the optimal development path. We could witness an entirely unexpected second half of the championship. More importantly, we might see F1 cars transform so dramatically that the machines we saw racing in Melbourne could feel like a distant memory.
Who knows? Perhaps just a few months of development will be enough, and by October or November, terms like “clipping” could already be a thing of the past.
The rapid pace of innovation will undoubtedly keep fans and analysts on the edge of their seats. This unprecedented potential for growth ensures that the championship battle remains fluid, where a single breakthrough in the factory could transform a midfield contender into a podium challenger overnight.
