Davide Valsecchi analyses the Ferrari crisis: technical confusion, questionable choices and too much trust in Hamilton. But according to him, the real fixed point is Charles Leclerc
Davide Valsecchi does not use half measures when commenting on Ferrari’s moment in F1. In an interview with Fanpage.it, the former driver and Sky Sport F1 voice expressed strong concern about the direction taken by the Maranello team, openly criticising the management of the technical project and the medium-term vision of the Scuderia.
“It seems to me that the only really positive thing this year at Ferrari is Leclerc,” Valsecchi said. “For years he was blamed for lacking consistency, yet today he is the only certainty in the team. He is almost always ahead of his teammate, and we are talking about a seven-time world champion. From a sporting point of view, he destroyed him.”
For Davide Valsecchi, the fundamental problem is the lack of solidity in the technical project. Ferrari, in his view, has lost its direction after a confused winter: “Last year McLaren showed incredible growth and I expected them to dominate. Ferrari was right behind them, but this year it disappointed me enormously. They got the car wrong and created a huge amount of confusion.”
But the confusion is not only technical. Internal management and leadership choices are also being questioned: “Mid-season they wanted to fire Fred Vasseur, then they renewed him, then they changed many people. It does not look like a calm team. When a regulation change arrives, the teams that are stable usually win. Ferrari, today, is not stable.”
Not even the arrival of Lewis Hamilton convinces Davide Valsecchi: “If the idea is a long-term project with a 40-year-old driver, it makes no sense. In the last three years he lost twice to George Russell at Mercedes. If it were a short-term plan I could understand it, but if you talk about the future, I say: think again.”
For the former GP2 champion, the real anchor of the Scuderia is only one: Charles Leclerc. “When you brought in Hamilton, Leclerc produced the best season of his career. He did not win, but he did not have the car to do it. I judge based on the internal comparison, and in that he dominated. If he were at McLaren today, he would be fighting for the title, maybe even ahead of Norris.”
Harsh words, but also realistic ones. Davide Valsecchi paints a Ferrari searching for identity, with a driver who shines despite the chaos and a future that still needs to be built.
