F1 confirm two races to be held at Silverstone track this season. F1 has reached an agreement with Silverstone .

The 2020 season was unable to start following the coronavirus outbreak with an attempted restart now pencilled in for beginning of July.

When racing does eventually resume, it is expected to be held behind closed doors.

One key concern is the global nature of the F1 industry, with drivers and staff flying in from all corners of the world to compete. To reduce the risk of a coronavirus outbreak, there were suggestions some tracks could host more than one race, with Silverstone now confirmed to hold a race at the end of July and one at the start of August.

Silverstone managing director Stuart Pringle told BBC Sport: “I am delighted to confirm that Silverstone and Formula 1 have reached an agreement in principle to host two races behind closed doors this summer. However these races will be subject to government approval, as our priority is the safety of all involved and strict compliance with Covid-19 regulations. I would like to thank all our fans who have been so supportive throughout this and to assure them we are determined to do all we can to help Formula 1 put on a show this summer.”

An F1 spokesman said: “We are continuing to have conversations with Silverstone and other promoters regarding a revised 2020 calendar.”

The 2020 season is expected to kick-off on the weekend of 3-5 July with the Austrian Grand Prix, followed by another at the same track a week later.

Europe will be the first pit stop on the F1 calendar with all races due to be held without spectators, before moving across to Eurasia, Asia and the Americas, and ending the season in the Middle East.

The schedule plans for between 15-18 races to be held across the campaign.

One issue for Silverstone race organisers to overcome is the UK’s guidelines, which state that all international travellers entering or returning to the country must undergo a period of two weeks quarantine upon arrival.

F1 are hoping to be made exempt from the rule, which poses a problem as the majority of the car manufacturers involved have factories in the UK, and will require their cars to be fixed at their respective bases in between races. Should the F1’s proposed plan go ahead as hoped, Austria would host the first two Grands Prix on consecutive weekends, followed by back-to-back races at Silverstone.

Discussions over holding the races at the home of UK F1 racing hit an initial hitch after Silverstone demanded a £15million fee, but those financial issues have since been ironed out.
