The third official meeting of the 2025 Formula 1 Commission took place today at the London headquarters of Formula One Management (FOM). The session was chaired by Stefano Domenicali, President and Chief Executive Officer of Formula 1, alongside Nikolas Tombazis, who currently serves as the Single-Seater Director of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).
Sporting Matters
One of the key topics addressed during the meeting was the revision of the deposit amounts required for appeals, protests, and requests for right of review. The Commission agreed to increase these financial guarantees, aiming to reduce the number of frivolous or unjustified challenges to FIA decisions—many of which are dismissed due to a lack of new and substantial evidence capable of reopening a case.
In addition, a new proposal was brought forward concerning the potential introduction of a specific fee for initiating investigations. This idea is still in the early discussion phase and is intended to further discourage unnecessary or speculative complaints that could burden the regulatory process.
Commercial Matters
On the commercial front, Formula One Management provided a comprehensive update to the Commission, highlighting strong growth trends across multiple metrics. The global fanbase of Formula 1 has now reached an estimated 827 million people, representing an annual increase of 10%. Particularly noteworthy was the growth in the United States, where the fanbase has expanded by 11% compared to the previous season.
Demographic insights also revealed that Formula 1 continues to attract a younger and more diverse audience. Currently, 43% of fans are under the age of 35, and 42% of the total global fanbase consists of women. On social media platforms, the sport now boasts an impressive 106 million followers.
Furthermore, the Commission noted the early success and positive reception of the recently released F1 feature film, which has already had a significant impact in boosting visibility and engagement during its first few weeks in theaters.
As always, any proposed changes discussed during the Commission meeting remain subject to final approval by the World Motor Sport Council.
