Chinese GP sprint qualifying live
The Formula 1 weekend in China immediately moves into action with the Sprint Qualifying session. Follow our live coverage of the session as it unfolds.
05:36 – The session will begin at 08:30 Central European Time (CET). Our live text commentary for the Sprint Qualifying of the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix will start ten minutes before the green light that signals the beginning of SQ1.
Meanwhile, during FP1 we once again saw the two Mercedes cars ahead of the rest of the field. The gap appeared quite significant, especially considering that Charles Leclerc was unable to complete his lap in a perfectly clean manner. During Sprint Qualifying we will see whether the advantage enjoyed by the German manufacturer over the other top teams remains similar to what we saw during the Melbourne weekend.
The opening round in Australia clearly suited Mercedes particularly well. The layout of the Melbourne circuit highlighted the main strength of the W17, especially its superior ability to manage battery deployment. In China the situation could be slightly different. Furthermore, the phenomenon known as super clipping should appear in a less pronounced way during qualifying compared to what was observed during the previous Saturday session at Albert Park.
Ferrari has brought several updates for this race weekend. After the tests carried out in Bahrain, we will once again see the rear wing nicknamed the “Macarena.” However, the engineers from the Scuderia have not stopped there, and an unusual new solution has also appeared on the halo with the aim of improving aerodynamic efficiency.
In China things get serious immediately with the Formula 1 Sprint Qualifying session. Teams have had only a single hour of free practice to gather the data and information required. During this session we will find out which teams had already done an excellent job in the simulator, arriving in Shanghai with their cars already well prepared for the weekend.
