For Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur, there’s no room for error with the SF-24 single-seater. After the Chinese Grand Prix, it’s time for reflection in Maranello. The imperative is to understand what went wrong at the 5.451-kilometre Shanghai International Circuit in order not to repeat the same mistakes in the next two races. Miami and Imola will be critical appointments: significant updates are expected on the car, which will set the direction for the rest of the 2024 Formula 1 season.

The Chinese Grand Prix was a difficult weekend for the Italian side, but one that has to serve as a tough lesson for Scuderia Ferrari. From setbacks like last weekend, much can be learned, but one must also know how to listen. Frédéric Vasseur is not looking for excuses, yet it seems the core issue is still missing. The team principal emphasizes the performance in the qualifying and the track surface as key issues in China, overlooking the poor tire management of the SF-24. Could this be a problem already being resolved?

“Since the beginning of the season, there’s a window where the whole group is very close,” the French manager explained at the end of the Chinese Grand Prix – “which means that, with small details, you can go from hero to zero. Starting from the back makes the race more difficult. You get dirty air in the first lap and, even if you are faster, you can’t overtake and you destroy your tires.” – he pointed out.

“It’s true that this is the first time we’ve come to Shanghai with this generation of cars,” explains Frédéric Vasseur, “[The bitumen treatment on the asphalt] didn’t help and we had problems with the evolution of the track. But these are by no means excuses. Everyone was in the same situation and some teams managed the circumstances better than others. We need to understand how to do a better job.” – the Frenchman continued.

According to the Scuderia Ferrari team principal, the team did not have a good weekend: “Collectively, we made too many mistakes. In this group, if you’re not perfect you don’t finish ahead. We will try again next time.” – Fred Vasseur concluded.
