Let’s revisit Charles Leclerc’s brilliant overtake on George Russell at Suzuka that earned him the Overtake of the Month award for September.
Charles Leclerc won the Overtake of the Month award for August and September with his outstanding move around the outside of George Russell at Suzuka.
The award covers both August and September, and to win it, the support of the fans is necessary, as they were invited to vote on the F1 social channels. Fans chose to reward Leclerc’s overtake on Russell in the Japanese Grand Prix.
The Ferrari driver was chasing fourth place behind the two McLarens. Despite having fresher tires compared to the Mercedes, the overtake was not an easy one.
Here’s the moment of award presentation in the Losail paddock, where we can see the move and hear Leclerc’s account.

“Beautiful, thank you!” exclaimed Charles Leclerc as he received the trophy with his name engraved on it.
Commenting on the overtake, #16 revealed that he didn’t expect to pull it off there: “To be completely honest, I didn’t expect to make that overtake! I mean, I hadn’t thought about doing it there. I knew it was a crucial part of the race, and at some point, I would have to go for it; otherwise, I would have lost too much time. It’s a very difficult track to overtake on. I saw an opportunity around the outside, so I went into Turn 1, thinking I would slow down in Turn 2. Then I realized I had enough space, so I went for it and got it done. It was pretty close to the edge, but, well, a great overtake! Thanks to the fans for voting for me.”
