Formula 1 looks to the future, risking turning its back on the past. As if the difficulties linked to the contract renewal of Monte Carlo and the only annual renewal of the Belgian Grand Prix were not enough, difficulties also arise for Monza, a special event that affects all Italian fans closely. Just a few days ahead of this year’s Italian Grand Prix, Formula 1 President and Chief Executive Officer Stefano Domenicali warned that the Temple of Speed will Monza may not remain on the calendar beyond 2025.
For now, the current contract between F1 and the Monza organizers means that we are certain to return to Monza for three more years, but what about after 2025? The former Ferrari boss and current president of Formula 1 has hinted that without a change of mentality, not even the circuit owned by ACI (The Automobile Club d’Italia) is safe.
“The line is long for new venues to become part of Formula 1. However, in order to give value to the world championship I would say that we must not go beyond 24 races (a limit also set by the Agreement of Concord, ed.). Then it is possible that we will have to make other assessments, but I believe that this is the limit beyond which we should not go” – said Stefano Domenicali in a recent interview for Sky Sport F1
“Monza? This is the centenary and we will celebrate it. It is part of Formula 1, but this is not enough to make sure that it will always be part of Formula 1. The whole system needs to understand that the GP needs investment, so that both the fans and the teams can make the most of the event. We are trying to make a Grand Prix a unique and different experience. There are problems with Monza and they need to be solved, it’s not a good situation. The competitive drive to have GPs on the Formula 1 calendar must ensure that everyone raises the bar. Let’s take Spa-Francorchamps as an example: it was right to put pressure on the Grand Prix, because it’s not just the history that allows the promoters to have a Grand Prix in the F1 World Championship and to ensure that an event remains on the calendar” – the Formula 1 CEO concluded.
