Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali is confident that Scuderia Ferrari will be able to do better this season than last year.

2020 was the Italian team’s worst in a long time as they finished P6 in the Constructors’ World Championship and never came close to winning a race, claiming only three podiums.

With stable regulations and limited development on cars allowed, the pecking order is expected to remain largely the same in 2021.

Nevertheless, Domenicali, who used to be Ferrari team principal, having seen the atmosphere in the garage is sure things will get better for his former team.

“Of course, from a difficult starting point you will do, for sure, better,” he said in an interview with the official F1 site – “I’m not in a position to judge, I’m just in a situation where I can see there are a lot of the good vibes.”

An idea Scuderia Ferrari have expressed support for in recent weeks is a new format referred to as sprint qualifying.

It looks set to be introduced this season after Ferrari and other teams backed the proposal being tested at three race weekends on the calendar.

While nothing has been confirmed yet, Stefano Domenicali is confident that will soon change: “We are working very hard. We discussed it with the drivers, we are going to discuss again with the teams. We hope to finalise in the next few days the new idea. We need to, of course, then submit it to the World Council for their approval.” – he explained.

The new format would see a traditional qualifying session take place on the Friday of a race weekend which would determine the starting order for a Saturday sprint race. The results of that would then decide the grid for Sunday’s race.

Domenicali previously confirmed the idea would be tested at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, and it is believed the other two races will be Monza and Sao Paulo, with Montreal also rumoured.

However, reports have emerged that with the budget cap being introduced, teams are worried about the potential extra costs in the event of car damage. Having a second race on a weekend increases those chances.
