Formula 1 returned to action in Canada for a thrilling Sprint Qualifying session in Montreal. With the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve continuing to evolve throughout the day, drivers faced constantly changing grip levels and intense pressure in a dramatic Friday session that delivered plenty of surprises.
SQ1: Lewis Hamilton shines, Fernando Alonso crashes out
With just eleven minutes available in the opening segment, drivers rushed out immediately to maximise track time, with the exception of Liam Lawson and Alex Albon, who did not take part in the session following the issues they encountered during Free Practice 1.
Lewis Hamilton was the first driver to set a representative lap, opening with a 1:15.459. That benchmark was quickly beaten by Charles Leclerc, who went half a second faster as the circuit conditions improved rapidly.
Track evolution was obvious throughout the session, with lap times continuing to tumble as grip levels increased.
With three minutes remaining, Lewis Hamilton moved to the top of the timesheets, followed by Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen, while Charles Leclerc sat ninth. Alpine appeared to be in serious trouble, hovering near the elimination zone.
Then, just minutes before the chequered flag, the session was interrupted by a red flag after Fernando Alonso lost control of his Aston Martin AMR26 and crashed into the barriers. The Spanish driver was forced to climb out of the car, bringing his Sprint Qualifying to an early end.
Once the session resumed, drivers had only one final attempt to secure progression, making for a tense finish.
The drivers eliminated in SQ1 were: Sergio Perez, Lance Stroll, Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon and Liam Lawson.
SQ2: Max Verstappen survives, Carlos Sainz delivers late heroics
The second segment began with Lando Norris as the first driver to post a time, setting a 1:13.957. That lap was quickly beaten by Lewis Hamilton, before Mercedes raised the bar once again.
Both George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli jumped ahead of the Ferrari driver, with George Russell taking provisional control of the session. Charles Leclerc was sixth, behind both McLaren drivers, while Carlos Sainz sat ninth. Notably absent from the early action was Max Verstappen, who waited until just five minutes remained before heading out on track.
The closing moments were packed with tension, but when the chequered flag fell, the eliminated drivers were confirmed as Nico Hulkenberg, Gabriel Bortoleto, Franco Colapinto, Esteban Ocon, Oliver Bearman and Fernando Alonso. Carlos Sainz produced an excellent final lap to scrape through at the last possible moment, while Max Verstappen advanced in ninth place but appeared far from satisfied with the balance of his car.
SQ3: George Russell claims Sprint pole
In the final shootout, drivers wasted no time heading out, with the exception of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who opted for a one-lap strategy.
George Russell delivered when it mattered most, securing pole position for the Canadian GP Sprint. Andrea Kimi Antonelli came incredibly close, finishing just thousandths behind to complete a Mercedes front-row lockout McLaren secured the entire second row, while Ferrari had to settle for the third row, with Lewis Hamilton in fifth and Charles Leclerc in sixth. Max Verstappen finished seventh.
