During the analysis provided to Sky Sport F1, Marc Gené, former Formula 1 driver and current TV commentator, offered his reflections on the Free Practice 2 (FP2) for the Canadian Grand Prix.
“I have to say that I’m noticing a significant convergence between Ferrari and Mercedes compared to Red Bull,” commented Marc Gené. The reason behind this trend is not clear, but according to the former Spanish driver, there is an evident shift in the balance of power among these teams.
Nevertheless, Marc Gené still has believes that Red Bull and Max Verstappen remain the favorite for the Canadian Grand Prix, which takes place this weekend at the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal. “Max Verstappen remains the driver to beat,” he stated, but the Spaniard also emphasized that a small misstep could cost him dearly. “If he doesn’t execute every aspect of the race perfectly, he risks ending up in a lower position” as it happened on Friday in the second free practice session, when the Dutchman finished fifth in Montreal – “This is a factor not to be underestimated, despite being the favorite for pole position and the win.” – the Sky Sport F1 TV commentator pointed out.
However, Marc Gené acknowledged that the competitors are getting closer. “The other contenders are reducing the gap, although I don’t know why,” he observed, suggesting that this weekend at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve the race might not be as straightforward as expected.
