Not just Bahrain and Saudi Arabia: more races at risk as Imola eyes return
After the already confirmed cancellations of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix, more changes could soon follow in the Formula 1 calendar. According to emerging reports, several additional races are now at risk, while circuits such as Imola and Portimão are hoping for a potential return to the schedule.
There is a growing sense of uncertainty within the F1 paddock. The start of the season has already been marked by intense debates surrounding the new regulations, which have failed to satisfy both drivers and fans. The tensions extend across both technical and political fronts, including ongoing discussions about Mercedes’ controversial power unit and the much-debated starting procedure, which Ferrari is no longer willing to adjust.
However, the challenges go far beyond what has been seen on track in Australia and China. The ongoing war in the Middle East continues to destabilize countries in the region, forcing them to postpone major international sporting events. For Formula 1, this has already resulted in the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix, which are now unlikely to be rescheduled later in the season.
Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Azerbaijan also at risk
According to Autosprint, concerns are now spreading to other rounds of the championship. In particular, the Grands Prix in Qatar, Abu Dhabi, and Azerbaijan are all considered at risk, as these countries are indirectly involved in the ongoing conflict. Added to this uncertainty is the Madrid Grand Prix, where significant delays in the construction of the Spanish circuit are raising doubts about its readiness.
In the background, Imola and Portimão are preparing for a possible return. Both venues were already called upon during the Covid-19 period and could once again step in if needed. Formula 1’s objective is to maintain a calendar of at least 20 races, ensuring that it meets its commercial commitments with global broadcasters and rights holders.
