Silverstone offers itself for a second GP in case of further cancellations
The war in the Middle East continues to inevitably impact the entire world, and Formula 1 is no exception. The championship has already been affected by two postponements in the early part of the season – Bahrain and Saudi Arabia will do everything possible to try to recover the lost race weekends – but the current situation does not suggest anything positive, especially considering the presence of Azerbaijan, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi in the final stretch of the championship.
If, in the best-case scenario, all 24 originally scheduled races can still be completed, the worst-case scenario could see the calendar reduced to just 19 Grands Prix. For this reason, behind the scenes, a true “Plan B” is beginning to take shape, with several alternative solutions being explored in order to avoid completely distorting the structure of the 2026 World Championship.
A second race at Silverstone?
One circuit that has publicly made itself available to help strengthen the calendar – effectively putting forward its own candidacy – is Silverstone. The British circuit could therefore host a double event, similar to what happened in 2020 with the back-to-back British Grand Prix and the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix of Formula 1.
According to a statement made by a circuit spokesperson to Sky News UK, “the circuit has come forward because it already stepped in during the Covid period and, if this could be of support again, we would obviously be happy to do so.”
The spokesperson added: “There are numerous practical issues to consider, but the offer is on the table: Formula 1 knows we are here and that we can move quickly if required. Clearly, we do not currently have free slots in our calendar, and that is a point of pride for us, but in a crisis situation everything can be rescheduled.”
