The Brazilian Grand Prix started in turmoil for Ferrari as both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc were caught in two separate incidents, causing major damage to their cars and forcing Leclerc to retire. The Scuderia’s race got off to a disastrous beginning, with the Briton continuing despite damage while the Monegasque driver was unfortunately forced to withdraw.
Start-line collision: Hamilton and Leclerc affected
Interlagos witnessed a shocking sequence at the first corner. Lewis Hamilton was the first to be involved: on Turn 1 of Lap 1, Carlos Sainz made contact with him, causing minor floor damage. However, the trouble didn’t end there. On the main straight during Lap 2, Lewis Hamilton collided with the rear of Franco Colapinto’s car, resulting in significant front wing damage. He pitted to replace the wing, but the car continued to show problems.
For Charles Leclerc, the situation worsened. After the Safety Car period, he became part of a three-car collision involving Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Oscar Piastri. The Australian’s inside move pushed into Kimi Antonelli, which in turn impacted Leclerc, forcing him to retire. It was another bitter result for the Monegasque, with Brazil continuing to prove a challenging circuit for him.
Investigations and implications
Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri is under investigation for his involvement in the incident and could face a penalty. Both Ferraris now have their races severely compromised, leaving Hamilton with the difficult task of salvaging points and limiting the damage for the team.
