Keeping up with the times
Formula 1 is gradually striving to fulfill its ecological commitment, which led to the announcement of achieving zero carbon emissions by the 2030 season.
It is a challenging and ambitious endeavor that aligns with the need, particularly expressed by younger generations, for the motorsport world to pay greater attention to crucial issues of our time, such as climate change and planetary pollution.
2030 objective
The latest step taken by the sport to reduce its impact on the planet and increase sustainability is tied to its partnership with the brand DHL. Formula 1’s logistics partner has announced that all transportation required for European trips in the 2023 F1 season will be carried out using trucks fueled by biofuel. This will result in a carbon emissions reduction of at least 60% compared to standard fuels, with the potential for even greater savings.
New fleet
DHL’s first fleet of biofuel-powered trucks consists of 18 new units that will be fueled with HVO100 (hydro-treated vegetable oil) drop-in fuel. These vehicles will cover a total distance of approximately 10,600 kilometers during the European races of this season. Equipped with GPS to monitor fuel consumption and optimize more efficient routes, these new trucks will reduce carbon emissions while maintaining the same level of performance in terms of cargo capacity and travel distance as their diesel counterparts, in addition to providing a safer and more sustainable supply process.

Crucial partnership
“We are a sport that operates on a global scale, and DHL plays a fundamental role in helping us address the logistical impact we have as a world championship,” said Ellen Jones, Head of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) at Formula 1. “Together, we are continuously seeking more sustainable solutions, and thanks to innovations like biofuel-powered trucks, we will be able to take another step forward in reducing our carbon emissions and achieving our sustainability goal: being Net Zero by 2030.”
