Nothing goes right for Ferrari in Australia, and even Fred Vasseur risks being “blown away.” At the end of the race, the team principal of the Maranello-based team is engaged in interviews, trying to justify what happened in Melbourne on a disastrous Sunday for the Tifosi. During the interviews, a strong gust of wind nearly knocks him over. The image goes viral on social media, perfectly reflecting Ferrari’s situation, where everything that could go wrong did go wrong.
Ferrari’s disappointment in Australia, Fred Vasseur’s video during interviews
Nonexistent race pace, completely wrong strategies, and turbulent communication between the pit wall and the drivers. All this forces Ferrari to settle for a bitter 8th and 10th place, an outcome not even considered in the worst-case scenario before one of the most anticipated championships.
“Today, we were probably on Mercedes’ pace. It’s hard to take anything from this race; the strategy wasn’t right. Now let’s focus on the next one.” These are Vasseur’s words to SkySport Italia after the race. However, analyzing the race pace, Ferrari appears slightly behind its rivals.
“McLaren is a step ahead; behind them, we’re all close together,” added the Ferrari team principal. However, wet conditions may have skewed the data. Yet, the Maranello squad never really seemed at the level of Mercedes or even Max Verstappen, the only one capable of keeping up with McLaren.
As we had anticipated well in advance, after bold statements, celebrations, and high expectations, Ferrari leaves Albert Park significantly downsized. The fans’ disappointment is directly proportional to the illusion of the past two months. Now, onto China, hoping for a different story. With heads down (?)
