A Formula 1 circuit on the island of Tenerife? It can be done. The project was presented at an event led by Antonio Lobato and supported, among others, by Carlos Sainz Jr. The layout will be made in Atogo, in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, right next to the Tenerife Sur airport. Yesterday’s presentation is completed with today’s visit to the site where the circuit is designed.
“The track is incredible. It has three particularly beautiful corners. I want to try it and I hope it is finalized very soon.” – Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz said during the presentation. “I would put the DRS on the two main straights, in particular the second has a small left corner. After all, with Formula 1 single-seaters it would be absolutely easy. We already do a lot of corners with the DRS and it could be like that here too,” he underlined. “At the end of that straight there are two corners. The second corner has a downhill slope that you don’t see in the simulator and if you get confused, you run off the track. It’s a blind corner” – he explained.
“We had been waiting for a long time and really wanted the circuit to be approved. A circuit that has been planned since the 90s in different phases in which it seemed that something big could happen” – added Enrique Arriaga, alongside who Carlos Sainz and others will visit the grounds today – “We already have the final approvals for the project, the contract documents for the works and also the budget item,” he continued.
