The Federation is already considering the new F1 regulations that will come into effect in 2026. It will be a true revolution, especially on the power unit side. The MGU-H will be eliminated, the electric power will triple, and fuels will become 100% sustainable. However, the weight of the engines is expected to increase by about 30% compared to the current ones, and many fear that Formula 1 risks losing its essence.
Main goal: To Reduce Minimum Weight
The first step the FIA would like to take with the 2026 regulations is to lighten the F1 cars, making them less bulky. The width should be reduced by 10 centimeters, and the length by 20. Currently, the lower weight limit is 798 kg, but the Federation would like to lower it by 40/50 kg, as stated by FIA’s responsible person Nikolas Tombazis.
However, Nikolas Tombazis is also convinced that abolishing the minimum weight is not feasible, as teams would push themselves even further in the quest for the limit. “It would start an endless competition, with unpredictable consequences,” commented Nikolas Tombazis. “However, there will be no more concessions if the tires or any control unit become heavier than expected. The minimum weight will remain at the value we have set.” Nikolas Tombazis is indeed convinced that in 2026, some cars will still be overweight.
Currently, it seems that the definition of the 2026 F1 regulations is progressing well. “We are on the right track with the 2026 car,” Nikolas Tombazis commented. “The driving characteristics will be quite similar to the current ones. The cars will perform much better in traffic. This should make overtaking easier. We are also working on the DRS system.” – he concluded.

There seems to be some consideration for active aerodynamics, both at the front and rear. This would be very useful for overtaking but also to ensure better efficiency in managing and recovering electric power.
