F1 2026 controversy: Ferrari seeks FIA clarification on rival engines

Controversy is already brewing in Formula 1 as Ferrari and other teams reportedly requested clarification from the FIA regarding the engines that some rivals will use in 2026. Although the Barcelona tests are still more than a month away, tensions appear to be heating up. The first disputes have emerged over the power units that certain teams plan to run under the new technical regulations.

The power unit will be a central element of the 2026 rules, featuring a more significant electric component that demands careful consideration for reliability and performance. Even small differences could make a substantial impact, which explains why manufacturers like Ferrari are seeking guidance from the FIA regarding rival engine designs.

Compression ratio at the center of debate

According to Motorsport Magazin.com, the focal point of these discussions is the compression ratio of the new engines. The technical regulations specify a geometric compression ratio of 16:1, down from the 18:1 ratio used until recently. However, there are reports suggesting that Mercedes, and possibly Red Bull, may have found a way to exceed this limit. If confirmed, these teams could gain a significant advantage in power output and lap times — estimated at around 15 horsepower and three-tenths of a second per lap. Numbers that are impossible to ignore, prompting Ferrari, Honda, and Audi to ask the FIA to scrutinize the matter thoroughly.

FIA intervention could shape the season

It remains to be seen whether and how the FIA will intervene. The issue is of critical importance and could generate substantial controversy right from the early rounds of the 2026 season. With the new regulations reshaping power units and team strategies, clarity from the governing body is essential to ensure a level playing field and prevent unfair advantages.

The 2026 F1 season has therefore been hit by its first major technical row before a single car has turned a wheel on track. Ferrari, Honda, and Audi have raised concerns with the FIA regarding the engine compression ratios of Mercedes and Red Bull, fearing a potential 15hp deficit. This early political maneuvering underscores the immense pressure teams are under to master the new power unit regulations, where a single clever interpretation of the rules could define the hierarchy of the sport for years to come.
