Historically, the Formula 1 season has kicked off in Australia, but after the cancellation of the 2020 event, it lost this distinguished role. Lately, Bahrain has taken over, hosting both the pre-season testing and the opening race, a logical move that minimizes the costs of travel in the Middle East. This year, Melbourne is set to host the third race of the season, following the events in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, just as it did last year. However, this arrangement isn’t set in stone. A new contract with Formula One Management extends the race’s duration until 2035 and includes provisions for Albert Park to occasionally act as the season opener.
The plan initially had the 2024 season beginning in Australia, but a change in scheduling brought Bahrain back as the first race, while the Australian Grand Prix Corporation received a two-year extension, ensuring the event runs through to 2037. However,, the plan for the 2025 Formula 1 championship marks a return to Australia for the season’s start, with pre-season testing expected to remain in the Middle East before moving to Melbourne for the inaugural race, as explained in this video:
