Mercedes F1 driver Lewis Hamilton is not a technician like former Scuderia Ferrari driver and Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher one of the Brit’s former colleagues pointed out.
Philipp Brändle is an aerodynamicist who has worked for Mercedes for six years alongside Lewis Hamilton, which means that he can accurately evaluate how the seven-time World Champion operates.
The former Mercedes staff member opened up on Lewis Hamilton’s struggles at the beginning of a championship in which he currently sits 75 points behind Championship leader Max Verstappen, ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Michael Schumacher had difficult periods during his career, and Lewis Hamilton is experiencing one of those at the moment.
After the first seven rounds of the 2022 Formula 1 season, Lewis Hamilton has only one podium finish, while his younger teammate George Russell proved much better at managing the race situations and getting the most out of every opportunity given the underperforming Mercedes car. Brändle feels that Lewis Hamilton works best when he has confidence in the car.

“Lewis needs to have confidence in the car, which is very important to him,” Brändle said, as reported by speedweek.com. “He’s not like [Michael] Schumacher and doesn’t have the technical background. But he can feel the car particularly well.

At the same time, Philipp Brändle believes that Lewis Hamilton should not be ruled out of the 2022 Formula 1 title race, pointing out that the British driver commenting that he was 32 points behind the leader in 2021 before fighting his way back to the top in much fewer races, although he could count on a much faster car than this season
