Scuderia Ferrari ended the 2022 Formula 1 championship in second place in the Driver and Constructors standings thanks mainly to the points accumulated in the first part of the season. Then many changes during the winter, above all the change between Mattia Binotto and Frederic Vasseur.
A move that should have led to a further step forward. But that, so far, he hasn’t produced the expected improvements, at least in terms of results. Only 26 points scored by the Maranello team in the first three races of 2023: a very disappointing total l, poor we could say compared to what the world championship ambitions were in the month of February.
Ferrari is going through a very complicated period. How could it get back on top? Former sporting director Daniele Audetto spoke about it to the microphones of Autosprint.
The words of Daniele Audetto
“Ferrari has recently been revolutionized on several occasions, but a new top, a new leader continues to be missing,” Daniele Audetto said in a recent interview when asked to indicate what the Maranello team is missing to return to winning ways in Formula One. Then he adds: “The current management has made deep and in some ways reckless decisions in terms of timing. However, these changes require time to adjust” – the former Ferrari team manager pointed out.
The change to which Daniele Audetto refers is obviously the one that brought Fred Vasseur to Maranello to take over from Mattia Binotto. Regarding the Frenchman, the former sporting director guarantees: “He is a serious professional who boasts great experience and who knows how to handle pressure and his men but, unfortunately for him, he works in a context in which there is no charismatic point of reference strongly immersed in the sporting component. John Elkann is very good at his job, but he works mainly in other areas. Benedetto Vigna is a genius, but I would also like to remind you that it takes time to achieve important results” – he added.

A comparison to the winning modern Ferrari: “President Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, who was a motorsport man with the help of the then Formula 1 owner Bernie Ecclestone went to Flavio Briatore to sign the contracts of Michael Schumacher, Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne. Montezemolo granted the expert and talented Jean Todt many years as team principal to achieve the title and he did well, because it is not with constant revolutions that great results are obtained!”.
Then a crazy suggestion: “Today Ferrari should do something very similar: John Elkann and Benedetto Vigna accompanied by Stefano Domenicali should go to Red Bull to discuss the possibility of signing Max Verstappen and Adrian Newey”.
Finally, a consideration on Mattia Binotto’s departure: “Ferrari’s mistake? Yes, he could very well have remained as technical director perhaps with Antonello Coletta at his side as team manager. Without taking anything away from Fred Vasseur, mind you” – Daniele Audetto.
