Nikolas Tombazis has given a lengthy interview for the Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera. In this article we focus on focus on bringing you some of his most important comments and thoughts on Red Bull’s dominance in the 2023 Formula 1 championship, the challenging period that Scuderia Ferrari is going through, and some of his experiences from the past.
Nikolas Tombazis’ words
The ground-effect Formula 1 was supposed to bring more balance. Instead, there is one team that dominates: Red Bull. But according to Nikolas Tombazis, it cannot be considered a failure: “Apart from Red Bull, all the others are close. But I believe it’s just a matter of time; performance convergence will be achieved soon. How soon? In the coming months, perhaps at the beginning of next year. Almost everyone is moving towards Red Bull’s technical concept, including Mercedes and Ferrari. We hope to see closely contested championships again, maybe like in 2021. But we cannot create them artificially.”
The director of all single-seater championships then explains his last statement: “We cannot go against the ability of some to do a better job than others. We have to acknowledge it, with these rules, some have done better.”
Regarding the situation at Ferrari, Nikolas Tombazis doesn’t feel comfortable giving negative judgments about his former team: “I don’t allow myself to criticize or go into details. It’s easy to talk from the outside while they face enormous pressures. Ferrari has a capable team and everything it takes to win. They are taking the right steps, but others are not standing still.” As for Red Bull, the Greek racing car designer who has worked in Formula One since 1992 for the Benetton, McLaren, and Ferrari, believes that the Maranello team’s success in Milton Keynes is not solely due to Adrian Newey:

“Without taking anything away from Adrian, who is a genius, there is a large group behind him. In this Formula 1, you don’t win thanks to a single man.” – he pointed out.
Lastly, there is a mention of two significant events from the past: “The first Grand Prix I witnessed live? Hockenheim 1979, I was 11 years old. I was cheering for Niki Lauda, but he didn’t win. The most beautiful memory of my Formula 1 career? Winning the World Championship with Ferrari, Kimi Raikkonen in Brazil in 2007. Unforgettable.” – Nikolas Tombazis admitted.
