Through the columns of his official website, former Formula 1 team owner Gian Carlo Minardi analyzed the main events of the weekend in Qatar, focusing in particular on those involving the FIA. “Formula 1 should be the pinnacle of Motorsport, but it’s definitely losing momentum. We’ve experienced an intense weekend strongly characterized and influenced by penalties for exceeding track limits,” began the Italian entrepreneur, recounting the stages of the three-day event in Doha. He then delved into the topic and also addressed the issue of safety, expressing his authoritative point of view.
Gian Carlo Minardi: “A dangerous situation has been created, and it’s not good”
First and foremost, Gian Carlo Minardi observed, “I had the impression that the problem of exceeding track limits is due to a suboptimal layout of the track and its curves, which induces drivers to make errors.” In addition to the numerous penalties during the weekend, there was also the issue of curbs. “All these aspects should be carefully evaluated before granting approval. We are dealing with a track that needs a thorough analysis,” stated the Italian manager.
As we mentioned earlier, Gian Carlo Minardi also wanted to address the safety issue: “We often talk a lot about safety, and then we force the drivers to make up to four pit stops, completing four qualifying stints, as demonstrated by Max Verstappen’s best time, just slightly over a second slower than the pole position. All of this goes against the safety of the drivers themselves, who crossed the finish line exhausted, also due to the heat and high humidity levels.”

As evidence of the extreme conditions in which the race took place, there is the case of Logan Sargeant, who retired from the race due to the infernal temperatures. “On the one hand, it was right to impose a maximum number of laps for each tire to avoid unpleasant events, but on the other hand, a dangerous situation has still been created. This is not good,” Gian Carlo Minardi concluded.
