Home » Ex-F1 driver on “inconsistent” SF-23 performance” and Ferrari’s prospects for 2024 F1 season

Ex-F1 driver on “inconsistent” SF-23 performance” and Ferrari’s prospects for 2024 F1 season. Ex-F1 driver reflects on SF-23 performance and Ferrari's chances for 2024.

According to Alex Caffi, the former F1 driver, Ferrari’s performance has been inconsistent this season. Speaking on Pit-Talk, he also mentioned that making a prediction for Maranello in 2024 is quite challenging.

The 2023 F1 season will undoubtedly be remembered by Ferrari and the fans of the Prancing Horse as one of the most difficult and disappointing seasons in recent years. In the remaining 5 races, the Maranello team will face the tough task of displacing Mercedes from second place among the constructors. Given the current competitiveness of the SF23, this is no small feat. Then the Scuderia will have to turn the page and look ahead to 2024. Will the red car for the next F1 season be more competitive? Or will it not change much compared to this season?

Italian racing driver Alex Caffi, who participated in 75 F1 Grands Prix and currently serves as the team owner of NASCAR Whelen Euro Series team Academy Motorsport, spoke on this topic to Pit-Talk, expressing the difficulty of predicting Ferrari’s performance.

“Making predictions about Ferrari is like asking for all 6 correct numbers in next Sunday’s lottery. How can you make a prediction about Ferrari? They come to Monza and win almost. Then they go to another circuit, and it seems like they are there, and then they suddenly disappear completely from the radar and you find them in the middle of the standings. I don’t know; it’s difficult to understand what they are doing, what they are trying…”

“…whether Monza was a bit of a gift for the fans… A bit like it was in my time when they would invariably take pole positions at Monza and Imola for the two Ferraris, then they would completely disappear. It’s really hard to say; I don’t think they even know. I don’t see them particularly convinced of which path to take. Because in any case, the car is inconsistent, and when the car is inconsistent, it’s the most challenging thing.”

“You know, if you have a problem in one area, you try to work on that. But here, you can’t understand it anymore… Because in one race it works, and in the next race, it disappears… Like everyone, we hope that they can certainly recover, get back into the top 2-3 teams because, in any case, it’s an important brand. A competitive Ferrari is needed for any era of F1 worth discussing. Beyond being a fan or not, everyone wishes for it.”

The hope is indeed that such a bitter season (with only one victory) does not repeat in 2024. The 2024 project is full of unknowns; will the “Vasseur cure” manage to make a difference from the next season onwards? At the very least, to return to winning some GPs, because regarding the world championship, it will likely remain a Verstappen-Red Bull dominance even in the coming year.
