The future of Liberty Media between F1 and MotoGP
After Formula 1, Liberty Media is aiming to launch another platform in terms of revenue growth. As is well known, the American company is interested in acquiring MotoGP: an agreement with Dorna was reached a year ago on the basis of €4.2 billion, but the actual handover requires approval from the European Union’s antitrust authority.
As reported by the Reuters news agency, Liberty Media is close to receiving the EU’s support following the investigation opened last December. The main concern was the potential impact of holding both top motorsport competitions at once on broadcasting and streaming, which could lead to a monopoly in TV rights.
“There is a large and growing market for audiovisual entertainment that goes well beyond sport, and the transaction will improve MotoGP’s ability to compete in this highly competitive market,” said a Liberty Media spokesperson.
Possible F1 sale
Liberty Media’s plans go beyond MotoGP and also concern Formula 1. After acquiring it in 2017 for $4.4 billion, it is believed that thanks to the Americans’ efforts, the value of F1 has increased fivefold. The Times—citing internal sources—reported a rumor that Liberty Media might consider selling F1 in 2026 if it believes that growth in interest and revenue is slowing in the medium term. For now, however, nothing is concrete, and in fact, the increasing interest from circuits in joining the calendar suggests that F1’s healthy state could continue for a long time.
