The former Ferrari technical director has once again spoken about the Scuderia and his time in red, delivering a subtle message that perhaps Fred Vasseur and the team should take to heart.
Enrico Cardile recently joined Aston Martin after completing a gardening period following his departure from Ferrari last summer. The former Ferrari technical director and now right-hand man to Adrian Newey spoke to F1 Beyond the Grid about his years at Ferrari, sharing what could be seen as advice for Frédéric Vasseur and the team.
Enrico Cardile’s name was frequently discussed at the start of this season. Once the issues with the SF-25 became clear, his name emerged as a scapegoat for the ongoing failures. It’s worth noting that the decision to adopt the front pull-rod suspension was made by the former technical director himself. However, placing all the blame on him would be unfair, as it was a collective effort, and responsibility lies with the entire team.
Enrico Cardile: “The best advice I could receive…”
“In England, people are much less emotional, which is definitely a strength. Here, you stay calm, especially under pressure, and you never lose focus on the objective. In Italy, however, emotions often take over. Once, Marchionne advised me not to read the newspapers. I think that is the best advice I could have received. At first, I struggled to follow it, but then I realized he was right. When you read, you get angry, and it’s not just about you, but also about the people you manage and the entire organization,” Enrico Cardile explained.
Ferrari has faced intense criticism following a disappointing 2025 season, with Fred Vasseur frequently at the center of months-long controversy that continued even after his contract renewal. The Frenchman has often reacted publicly to media comments, accusing journalists of destabilizing the team environment.
Perhaps the Aston Martin manager from Dravéil should follow the same advice that the former President gave Enrico Cardile years ago. It is important to note that Fred Vasseur experienced a period of uncertainty regarding his contract renewal, which made the situation challenging even for him. This tension was visible at times. Now, however, with Fred Vasseur firmly in command, as Elkann has also emphasized, he can approach the situation differently. Yet everything ultimately depends on one crucial factor: Ferrari’s competitiveness under his leadership.
