Retired Brazilian automobile racing driver who won both the Formula One World Championship and the Indianapolis 500 twice each, Emerson Fittipaldi, has applauded the great battle between Scuderia Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in the 2022 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, describing it as “on the limit” and “art of driving.”
The two drivers put on a great show in the first round of the 2022 Formula 1 season, the Bahrain Grand Prix, when Charles Leclerc got the better of his Dutch rival, and were back at it at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit last weekend as they once again battled for the race win. This time it went Max Verstappen’s way, as the 2021 F1 World Champion came out on top in what Christian Horner described as a “game of cat and mouse” through the DRS zones late in the Saudi Arabian Grand prix.
Double World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi admitted that he loved every moment of the Charles Leclerc – Max Verstappen duel: “I love to watch because they are driving on the limits but still respecting each others’ space,” he told F1 TV – “They were right on the edge, some times they are locking wheels, nearly, right on the limit – it is great to see. That is called the art of driving.” – he added.
Given the exciting on track battles and closely-contested race for the win in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, Emerson Fittipaldi feels Formula 1 has improved the show with its all-new generation of challengers for 2022. This championship the series has adopted ground effect aerodynamics as the downforce philosophy, designing cars which are able to follow more closely than last the previous ones and this has helped improve the action: “I think it is a great show, great race,” he said – “Everyone in the grandstands was standing up to see who is going to win. That is what the sport needed. I like the new rules, I like the way Formula 1 is going.”
When asked when was the last time he saw such a thrilling fight in Formula 1, Emerson Fittipaldi looked back at the title-deciding race from 2021 in Abu Dhabi, when Max Verstappen passed his Mercedes rival on the final lap after some controversial decisions and went on to win the F1 World title.

“The last race in Abu Dhabi. Fantastic racing. I’m sure this year is going to be an incredible year for Formula 1. I think the young generation is going crazy about Formula 1 and in America it before was just IndyCar racing now Formula 1 is huge.” – Emerson Fittipaldi concluded.
