Charles Leclerc could trigger major driver market moves if Ferrari struggles in 2026
Charles Leclerc may become a pivotal figure in the 2026 Formula 1 driver market if Ferrari fails to deliver a competitive package in the coming months. The Monegasque driver’s pace is undeniable: only ten drivers in F1 history have recorded more pole positions than Leclerc, underlining just how fast he is on a qualifying lap.
Yet, despite his speed, Leclerc’s tenure at Ferrari since joining the team in 2019 has been a mixed bag. He has only finished in the top four of the drivers’ championship on three occasions, and throughout his Ferrari career, he has only come within 100 points of the eventual champion once, which occurred in 2024. That same year, he was the top-scoring driver across a race weekend only three times. While the 2026 regulation changes could offer Leclerc an edge over teammate Lewis Hamilton in the intra-team battle, any advantage will be meaningless if the SF-26 finds itself mired in midfield performance.
Former Ferrari driver Ralf Schumacher has already suggested that the team could face a ‘disaster’ heading into 2026. However, until the cars take to the track in pre-season testing and at the Australian Grand Prix, the true pecking order remains uncertain. Even so, Leclerc is already being linked with potential moves to other teams, despite being under a long-term contract with Ferrari—a development that has immediately caught the attention of Aston Martin, who are reportedly active in scouting the driver market.
Aston Martin could free Lance Stroll to make room for Leclerc
Reports from AutoMoto have shed light on the potential scenario surrounding Leclerc’s future. The Ferrari driver reportedly has a release clause that he could activate at the end of the season depending on Ferrari’s overall performance. Conversely, Hamilton retains the ability to extend his contract, leaving Ferrari with significantly less leverage in the driver market than they might hope for.
It is understood that Aston Martin represents the ‘first option’ for Leclerc should he decide to leave Ferrari. While Fernando Alonso’s contract expires at the end of the season, Lance Stroll remains signed beyond 2026. However, Stroll’s performance has lagged behind that of his veteran teammate since their pairing, and if new team principal Adrian Newey aims to pursue another championship, he will recognize the need for an upgrade on the Canadian driver. Consequently, Stroll could potentially be released early to make way for Charles Leclerc, though Fernando Alonso’s potential retirement provides a smoother, less complicated route to securing the Monegasque driver without affecting Stroll’s contract.
Leclerc’s patience will be key before deciding on his 2027 team
Leclerc has previously instructed his management to pause outreach to other teams, but that stance could quickly shift if Ferrari’s 2026 car proves uncompetitive. Almost no team on the grid would turn down an approach from a driver of Charles Leclerc’s calibre. However, certain teams come with conditions: Red Bull may only consider him if Max Verstappen leaves, while McLaren are unlikely to disrupt their current partnership.
Patience will likely serve Leclerc best, as this season’s cars are expected to evolve rapidly. Committing to a new manufacturer too early could lead to regrets before the campaign concludes. Ferrari are actively trying to strengthen their internal setup to keep Charles Leclerc satisfied, but whether additional behind-the-scenes promises will be enough to retain him remains uncertain. Leclerc has invested considerable trust in the Scuderia, and time is quickly running out for Ferrari to repay that confidence with a car capable of matching his ambitions.
