Dutch professional racing driver Tom Romeo Coronel, whose most important results are winning the Marlboro Masters of Formula 3 race in 1997, the Formula Nippon championship in 1999, and the 2006 and 2009 World Touring Car Championship Independents’ Trophy, feels that Scuderia Ferrari should take into consideration signing Max Verstappen from rivals Red Bull.
The Maranello team have had a strong start to the 2022 Formula 1 championship, with their F1-75 car seemingly having slightly more pace than the RB18 of Max Verstappen’s car. Reliability issues have affected both teams, with Red Bull suffering a few retirements in the first part of the season, while Ferrari having to retire from the Spanish Grand Prix and Azerbaijan Grand Prix with Charles Leclerc due to power unit issues. As a result, Max Verstappen has to build a big lead at the top of the World Championship standings.
Tom Coronel, though, feels that Ferrari should try to sign Max Verstappen from Red Bull, as he believes the Dutch driver is the main reason why Red Bull are ahead of the Italian side this season. When asked whether Max Verstappen would have had even more success at the wheel of the red car in 2022 during a recent interview for the RacingNews365 F1 podcast, Tom Coronel explained:
“Yes, one hundred per cent. I’ve always said that. What is Max’s value? It’s what Ferrari is willing to pay for it. That is in any case the reason why Red Bull has signed him for the long term, because then at least you know that you have the best driver in the house. If I were Ferrari, the director of Ferrari, I would now ask: how much will it cost to buy Max away from Red Bull? Who says it can’t be done? I’ve seen so many things happen with money! Then you see at once what Verstappen is worth. He is worth infinitely; he is worth all Ferrari.” – he said.

The possibility of such a move actually taking place and is very small, extremely unlikely, given the fact that Max Verstappen has signed a contract extension with Red Bull until the end of the 2028 championship, while Charles Leclerc has a deal until 2024 and will most likely continue with Ferrari beyond the 2024 season.
