There is a lot of unpredictability ahead of the new Formula 1 season and Dutch former racing driver and team principal Johannes “Jan” Lammers said that Max Verstappen could dominate this championship, but that at the same time he would not be surprised if Scuderia Ferrari becomes World Champion in 2022.
For now no one can predict what will happen in the 2022 Formula One season, which begins this weekend in Bahrain and it is not even educated guessing because of the new rules and regulations which have been introduced and let to all-new cars.
Red Bull Racing Dutch driver Verstappen proved the fastest on the last day of 2022 Formula 1 pre-season testig session, about seven-tenths up on the Scuderia Ferrari F1-75 car of Charles Leclerc. Ferrari junior Mick Schumacher eventually set a time which was good enough for P2, but did so in Haas’ extra hours of testing, setting an impressive lap time which was only half a second slower than the Red Bull driver.
The lap time are not that relevant at the moment given that every team held back and are not aware of their rivals’ engine modes or fuel loads.
Jan Lammers, who made his debut in Formula One driving for Shadow and moved to ATS for 1980, admitted he also does not know what to expect for 2022:
“I have said before that I wouldn’t be surprised if Max will dominate this year,” – he said in a recent interview for NOS Studio Sport – “In addition, nothing would surprise me if Carlos Sainz becomes World Champion. One thing is for sure: it’s completely unpredictable.” – he added.

For now Mercedes and Red Bull have indicated Ferrari as having the fastest car in this first part of the season, but Scuderia Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz was quick to remind everyone that the results in the pre-season testing sessions does not necessary a quick Ferrari in the Bahrain Grand Prix:
“Everyone is impressed like everyone was impressed in ’18, ’19, ’17 and we all know that testing means nothing so I don’t know why people keep falling into the same trap year after year of trying to analyse testing too much. I don’t understand why people keep falling into the same trap of trying to conclude who is fastest without really knowing what the others are doing. It’s the same story as every year. We really don’t care, we really don’t understand how people keep doing this but it’s how it is and now we focus on ourselves.” – Carlos Sainz concluded.
