F1 | Drive to Survive 8: why Verstappen, Hamilton, and Alonso skipped Netflix cameras
In Formula 1: Drive to Survive 8, Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, and Fernando Alonso significantly reduced their presence in front of the Netflix cameras. The popular docuseries, which chronicles the behind-the-scenes world of a Formula 1 season, returns with season 8, but some major absences are felt on screen.
The new season focuses primarily on McLaren, the 2025 world champions, and still delivers the usual drama both on and off the track. This time, the spotlight is on the two papaya boys, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, competing for the title, with Max Verstappen ready to capitalize on any opportunity. The 2025 season also marked Lewis Hamilton’s first year with Ferrari—a challenging and “destructive” campaign for the seven-time world champion, who was unable to reach the podium even once.
In a season full of stories, the absence of these three F1 legends—often referred to as the “GOATs” on social media—is especially noticeable. Fernando Alonso appears briefly on camera at the start of the first episode, while Verstappen and Hamilton opted to boycott the series entirely.
Hamilton and Verstappen absent, Alonso present only briefly
Red Bull’s Dutch driver is not a big fan of Drive to Survive, a fact he has openly admitted before. He has previously criticized the Netflix series for creating a television show that often strays from reality. It seems likely that Max Verstappen chose to continue this personal protest in season 8.
Lewis Hamilton’s absence is also significant. Fans expected to hear him share his thoughts during his debut season in Ferrari, whether positive or negative. Instead, the British driver chose to stay away from the cameras, preferring silence that reflects what many have called his annus horribilis.
The presence of all three world champions in the series is limited to pre-existing audio and video material, including team radio recordings from races and clips from press conferences, rather than new on-camera interviews.
The absence of F1’s most iconic figures in Drive to Survive Season 8 signals a growing rift between the sport’s elite competitors and the “dramatized” storytelling that fueled the series’ initial global success. While McLaren’s inner-team rivalry provides plenty of entertainment, the lack of direct insight from legends like Hamilton and Verstappen leaves a void that highlight reels and team radios cannot entirely fill. As these drivers prioritize their privacy and technical focus over Netflix stardom, the show faces a turning point: it must find a way to remain authentic to the sport’s biggest stars or risk becoming a series that only captures the perspective of the chasing pack.
