Ferrari is experiencing a season of two halves. They started off strong, not on the same level as Red Bull but still capable of winning GPs and consistently asserting themselves as the second-best team. However, this was followed by a recent downturn, with failed updates leaving them now fighting for the position of third or fourth-best team.
“We didn’t have high expectations at the start of the season, so we preferred to stay focused on ourselves,” said a discouraged Charles Leclerc in a recent interview reported by ‘GPBlog.com’.
Charles Leclerc comments on being ‘overtaken’ by McLaren
There is undoubtedly disappointment within Ferrari, and it’s evident even from the outside. This is due to both the performance level of the SF-24, which hasn’t kept pace with that of the top teams, and the fact that some teams, like McLaren, have not only progressed but now seem capable of challenging Red Bull, taking on the role Ferrari should have had, considering their performances back in March/April.
When ‘GPBlog.com’ asked Charles Leclerc if McLaren’s rapid improvement, which ultimately allowed the Woking team to ‘overtake’ the historic Italian team, was at least predictable at the start of the year, Charles responded bluntly: “No. Predicting that McLaren would make such progress to reach Red Bull’s level in such a short time was impossible; if you had asked me at the start of the year, I wouldn’t have expected it. They’ve done an excellent job.” – the Monegasque driver pointed out.
Turning the focus to Maranello, the situation appears very problematic. There’s no real light at the end of the tunnel. Predicting when Ferrari will be back in the fight for victories is quite difficult, and Charles Leclerc can only conclude with a rather obvious statement: “We are aware of the areas where we need to improve, and we are giving everything we have to try to turn the situation around as soon as possible.” – the Monegasque driver concluded.
