Concern among Formula 1 teams is growing over the Madrid GP, scheduled for next season. Named Madring, it will be built in the IFEMA area, one of the most important commercial hubs of the Spanish capital. Tension surrounding the matter appears to have arisen during the Chinese GP when teams discussed next year’s regulations with the FIA.
This led to a discussion on the subject, which is already a hot topic in Spain. According to the Spanish outlet Motor.es, concerns about the circuit’s construction project have been raised not only by local residents but also by the municipal and regional political opposition. These concerns have also reached the teams, who, worried about the situation, reportedly sought clarification from the Federation during the Shanghai meeting.
Here’s what an anonymous insider told the Spanish outlet: “We are heading into the Madrid situation blindly. People are starting to get nervous, and the general feeling is that they are behind schedule. The teams won’t complain directly because the FIA is the point of contact for these matters. But they are putting pressure on the FIA, and the FIA is pressuring the circuit to speed things up—it’s chaos,” the source concluded.
The last edition of a Madrid GP was held in 1981, with Gilles Villeneuve winning for Ferrari. Since the official announcement of its return to the calendar, the news has sparked mixed reactions in the paddock. Could we witness a shocking postponement of the Madrid GP? We will have to wait and see.
