Following the official winter pre-season testing session at the Bahrain International Circuit, and just a few days ahead of the season-opener, which takes place this weekend in Sakhir, Italian former racing driver and the 2012 GP2 Series champion Davide Valsecchi shared his thoughts on what to expect in view of the start of the 2023 Formula 1 championship. The former driver, now a SkySportF1 journalist, believes that the man to beat will continue to remain be Max Verstappen, but he doesn’t exclude surprises from Ferrari, Fernando Alonso or Lewis Hamilton. “The car to beat is Max Verstappen’s. However, let’s wait for the first race because there can be surprises”, Davide Valsecchi said in a recent interview in front of the SkySportF1 microphones after the official pre-season testing session in Bahrain.

Asked about what surprises he feels we could see in the 2023 Formula 1 campaign, the former GP2 Series champion added: “Like I saw an Aston Martin with Fernando Alonso flying, like I saw a super convinced Ferrari, with a new boss (Vasseur, ed) who can make the difference. The two drivers are very strong, and this year Carlos Sainz seems to be a little bit more fit than in 2022. So both Ferrari driver are at a very high level… Fernando Alonso, you know, every year we say he’s old, but in the pre-season testing session he has shown to be very strong. I’m curious to see if others will do the difference” – the SkySportF1 journalist continued.

Finally a comment on Lewis Hamilton: “If he has a World Championship car, he will make the difference. If he has that World Championship car. If the car is not at the top, I have the feeling that the youngsters will prevail…” – Davide Valsecchi concluded.
