David Coulthard says Ferrari let Lewis Hamilton down with unacceptable error in Hungary. David Coulthard criticises Ferrari over late warning to Lewis Hamilton.

David Coulthard has strongly criticised Ferrari for the communication failure that contributed to Lewis Hamilton’s Hungarian Grand Prix grid penalty, describing the team’s inability to warn its driver about an approaching Oscar Piastri as unacceptable. The former Formula 1 driver argued that Hamilton had trusted the pit wall to monitor the circuit, only for a late warning to leave both the seven-time world champion and the Scuderia facing serious consequences.

The incident formed part of a damaging weekend in which Ferrari’s execution arguably cost it an opportunity to challenge for victory. After setting the pace in Friday practice, Hamilton was provisionally on course for pole following the opening runs in Q3. However, qualifying unravelled during his final attempt, and further mistakes contributed to Ferrari finishing outside the podium positions in the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix.

David Coulthard condemns Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton warning error

Hamilton questioned the decision to release him early for his final qualifying lap, after which Lando Norris beat him to pole position. The Ferrari driver then impeded Oscar Piastri moments after crossing the line, earning a three-place grid penalty that moved him away from the front row.

Ferrari accepted responsibility for the incident because Hamilton had been informed too late that Piastri was approaching on a flying lap. At the time, race engineer Carlo Santi was concentrating on the yellow flag triggered by Max Verstappen’s spin while Hamilton asked about the gap to the McLaren behind him.

Speaking on Channel 4 before Sunday’s race, Coulthard argued that such an operational failure would be unacceptable for any Formula 1 team, but was particularly disappointing from Ferrari. In his assessment, the pit wall should have identified that another car was on a flying lap and passed that information to Hamilton in sufficient time.

Coulthard acknowledged that drivers have mirrors, but emphasised that they also place considerable trust in their teams. Engineers have access to track maps and timing information that allow them to monitor the positions and status of every car, making the failure to provide an effective warning a particularly costly own goal for the Maranello team.

Grid penalty transformed Hamilton’s Hungarian Grand Prix

The sanction had a major influence on Hamilton’s race. Team principal Frédéric Vasseur later suggested, in comments reported by BBC Sport, that the lack of clean air had prevented the SF-26 from demonstrating its true potential during the Grand Prix.

Hamilton gained one place at the start but soon found himself trapped behind a struggling Max Verstappen. Unable to pass the Red Bull, the Briton lost the opportunity to pursue Norris and the McLarens at the front of the field.

Without the qualifying penalty, Hamilton would have started second and had a clear run towards pole-sitter Norris, although he would have launched from the less rubbered-in side of the grid. That counterfactual underlined how significantly Ferrari’s late warning changed the competitive outlook before the race had even begun.

The missed opportunity formed one part of a weekend in which a series of errors left Ferrari outside the Hungaroring podium. Vasseur subsequently acknowledged that the weekend had unravelled despite the pace shown by the SF-26 during practice and qualifying.

Coulthard separates Ferrari error from Hamilton’s pit-lane speeding

While Coulthard placed responsibility for the qualifying incident firmly on Ferrari, he reached a different conclusion over Hamilton’s second penalty of the Hungarian Grand Prix. The seven-time world champion received a five-second sanction after exceeding the pit-lane speed limit while attempting to reach the Safety Car line ahead of Kimi Antonelli.

Coulthard believed Hamilton had to accept responsibility for that offence. The Ferrari driver was found to have exceeded the permitted speed by only 0.1 km/h, but the narrow margin did not alter the penalty. The sanction ultimately dropped him behind team-mate Charles Leclerc in the final classification, leaving the Scuderia without a podium.

The penalty also reinforced the frustration surrounding a race that Hamilton believed Ferrari should have been capable of winning. Promising pace had again been undermined by errors on the pit wall and inside the cockpit.

Four Lewis Hamilton penalties across three race weekends

Hungary completed a sequence of four different penalties for Hamilton across three consecutive Grand Prix weekends. At Silverstone, he was punished for a false start, while the following round at Spa brought a penalty for causing a collision with George Russell.

His Hungarian weekend then added two more offences: impeding Piastri during qualifying and exceeding the pit-lane speed limit in the race. Coulthard compared the varied sequence to Hamilton filling out a Formula 1 penalty bingo card, as each sanction had resulted from a different infringement.

Hamilton acknowledged after the race that mistakes made both from the cockpit and on the pit wall could ultimately cost him the championship. Coulthard similarly stressed that the points being surrendered could prove extremely important, particularly in a title fight where consistency can be as decisive as outright speed.

For the former McLaren and Red Bull driver, the central issue was the standard expected from both Hamilton and Ferrari. Given the Briton’s vast experience and the resources available to the Scuderia, Coulthard maintained that both should be delivering consistent, world-class performances rather than allowing valuable points to disappear through avoidable errors.

The Hungarian Grand Prix instead exposed failures on both sides. Ferrari accepted that its late warning contributed to Hamilton’s grid penalty, while the driver bore responsibility for the pit-lane speeding offence. After a weekend that began with front-running pace, those mistakes helped turn a potential victory challenge into another costly missed opportunity.
