David Coulthard has offered an interesting perspective on Lewis Hamilton, placing the Ferrari driver alongside some of the greatest names in Formula 1 history while highlighting a key difference that sets him apart. The former Scottish driver acknowledged Ayrton Senna as the greatest of all time, while also praising Hamilton for his sportsmanship and conduct on track.
Coulthard’s 1990s in Formula 1
Deciding who the greatest driver of all time has been across 76 years of Formula 1 history is an extremely difficult task. This is true not only for fans, who are often influenced by personal admiration for a particular champion, but also for drivers who directly competed against those who went on to win multiple world titles.
One of those drivers is David Coulthard. The Scot was a Williams test driver in 1994, the same year Ayrton Senna arrived at the Grove-based team before the tragic loss of the Brazilian. Coulthard later became a McLaren race driver in the late 1990s, a period remembered not only for his on-track battles but also for his high-profile duels with Michael Schumacher.
Those clashes were not without controversy, with moments such as the infamous 1998 Belgian Grand Prix remaining etched in Formula 1 history. David Coulthard therefore experienced first-hand what it meant to race in an era defined by intense rivalries, strong personalities and constant pressure at the very top of the sport.
From driver to TV pundit
After bringing his racing career to an end, David Coulthard transitioned into a television pundit, a role that has allowed him to closely observe the rise and dominance of a new generation of multiple world champions, including Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.
Now 54 years old, the former McLaren and Red Bull man has never hidden his opinion when asked to name the greatest driver of all time. Speaking on the The Red Flags podcast, he was clear in his assessment, while also drawing an important distinction between the champions he mentioned.
“Senna is the greatest of all time,” David Coulthard explained. “And the reason I say that is because, if I’m not mistaken, I’ve even heard Max acknowledge his admiration for what Senna achieved in that era and for his uncompromising approach. If he believed in something, he would not be influenced by others. Senna, however, was not free from controversy, just like Schumacher and Max.”
It is precisely on this point that David Coulthard wanted to single out Lewis Hamilton. Among the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history, the Scot believes there is one champion who stands out for his on-track behaviour.
“Of the four – Schumacher, Hamilton, Senna and Verstappen – Lewis is probably the least controversial on track, and that is something that absolutely deserves to be recognised,” David Coulthard added.
The comparison places Lewis Hamilton firmly among the elite of Formula 1, while also underlining how different personalities and approaches have shaped the sport across generations. In Coulthard’s view, while controversy has often accompanied greatness, the Briton’s career has been marked by a level of fairness and composure that sets him apart from some of the most iconic figures the sport has ever seen.
