Scuderia Ferrari British driver Lewis Hamilton delivered a concerning message to the media following his disappointing 12th-place qualifying position at the Hungaroring Circuit in Budapest last weekend, raising questions about his future with the Maranello team in Formula 1. His remarks appeared to reflect frustration and uncertainty regarding his role within the Italian side.
After the Hungarian Grand Prix, Hamilton expressed the view that Ferrari might need to consider changing drivers if they want to achieve the kind of results that Charles Leclerc has been consistently delivering in the other SF-25 car. Despite these difficulties, Hamilton has taken a proactive approach, working closely with Ferrari’s engineers in an effort to adapt the SF-25 to better suit his distinctive driving style.
Earlier in the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, Lewis Hamilton revealed that he had previously submitted detailed documents to Ferrari outlining the specific challenges he is facing with the car. He hoped that by sharing this feedback, the engineering team could develop solutions to improve the SF-25’s drivability and performance.
Lewis Hamilton reportedly holds a significant influence over the option to extend his Ferrari contract through to the 2027 season. Reports had indicated that Lewis Hamilton’s multi-year agreement with Ferrari initially spans two years, with a contractual option for a third year extension, contingent on mutual satisfaction between the driver and the team.
However, according to a recent article in the Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, the conditions surrounding this contract extension option are strongly favorable to Hamilton. The publication states that Ferrari holds limited leverage in deciding whether Hamilton will remain with the team in 2027. This contractual position partially explains why Hamilton has been so involved in the team’s internal operations. The report also reveals that Hamilton has been in direct discussions with Ferrari CEO John Elkann regarding potential solutions, has advocated for the renewal of team principal Fred Vasseur’s contract, and has actively communicated technical concerns to the engineering staff—all with the goal of mastering the challenges posed by the SF-25 as quickly as possible.
The report further notes that Ferrari is likely to support the Briton position regardless of on-track results, primarily due to the significant commercial benefits his status as one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history brings to the team. Ferrari apparently has “no other choice” but to accommodate Lewis Hamilton, a consequence of CEO John Elkann’s decision to sign a driver of Hamilton’s stature and legacy.
Looking ahead, the competitiveness of Ferrari’s 2026 car will play a crucial role in determining Lewis Hamilton’s future in Formula 1. Although his comments after the Hungarian Grand Prix hinted at discouragement—especially following his first points-free race for Ferrari—Hamilton has made it clear that his passion for racing remains strong.
The seven-time world champion continues to pursue his eighth world title and believed Ferrari would provide the opportunity to achieve this when he made the high-profile switch from Mercedes before the start of the 2024 season. With the option to extend his contract into 2027 resting squarely in his hands, the upcoming 2026 season will be pivotal in deciding whether Hamilton has the motivation and ability to compete in what would be an unprecedented 21st consecutive year in Formula 1.
Should the Briton struggle with pace in Ferrari’s revamped 2026 challenger, it could signal that the 2026 season will mark the conclusion of his extraordinary Formula 1 career.
