The Circuit of the Americas in Austin is prepared to support Formula 1 if disruption to the 2026 calendar creates the need for another race, although COTA chairman Bobby Epstein believes a fourth US F1 race after the Las Vegas Grand Prix remains unlikely. The Texas circuit wants to be ready to stage a second event if Liberty Media cannot secure other venues needed to guarantee a 24-race season, but no discussions have taken place so far.
COTA’s position comes amid uncertainty surrounding the Formula 1 calendar because of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel and Iran. Although Austin’s favourable climate and location could make it a potential contingency option, its already busy schedule represents a major obstacle.
COTA responds to possibility of a fourth US F1 race
Formula 1 has already confirmed that the Bahrain Grand Prix will be relocated to Malaysia’s Sepang circuit at the beginning of October, replacing the cancelled April date and taking the updated 2026 Formula 1 calendar to 23 events.
However, considerable doubt remains over the final two rounds of the season in Qatar and Abu Dhabi because of the continuing war. Formula 1 intends to wait as long as possible before reaching a definitive decision, but the championship is also preparing an emergency plan. Imola is among the circuits being considered as a possible replacement venue in December.
When asked whether COTA could host an additional race after the Las Vegas Grand Prix, taking advantage of the logistical convenience of remaining in the United States and Austin’s favourable weather, Bobby Epstein explained that no talks had taken place. Such a move would give the United States four Formula 1 events following the Miami, Las Vegas and United States Grands Prix.
Bobby Epstein says another Austin race is not currently planned
“I think we are happy with what we are doing now, and our calendar is fairly full, so I don’t think there is any possibility of that happening after Las Vegas this year,” Bobby Epstein told Speed City Broadcasting.
Nevertheless, the COTA chairman did not completely close the door on helping Formula 1 if circumstances changed. The venue recently secured its long-term future on the F1 calendar, reinforcing Austin’s established role within the championship’s American presence.
“But the world is a dynamic place, and if we can adapt and help our F1 partners, we would. However, I don’t think it is on the agenda this year,” Bobby Epstein added.
Why Formula 1 wants to hold at least 22 races
Formula 1 is aiming to stage at least 22 races this season to preserve the sporting integrity of the championship, give teams and drivers the minimum calendar length communicated in advance and meet contractual requirements.
With the addition of the Malaysian race, the total has already risen to 23 events. Consequently, if the Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix cannot take place, Formula 1 would need only one replacement event to retain a minimum 22-race calendar.
A second Austin race therefore remains an emergency possibility rather than an active plan. COTA has indicated that it would be willing to assist Formula 1 if necessary, but Bobby Epstein does not expect the United States to stage a fourth Grand Prix during the 2026 season.
