Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz will take a ten-place grid penalty for this weekend’s French Grand Prix at the Circuit Paul Ricard in Le Castellet due to excessive component usage. Carlos is using his third control electronics of the 2022 Formula 1 championship, as only such parts are allowed for the season, which leads to an automative ten-place grid drop for Sunday’s race in France.
Carlos Sainz was on his way to a second place finish last time out in Austria, but had to retire with 12 laps to go due to a power unit failure, with fire billowing from the rear of his Ferrari F1-75, and it remains to be seen whether the damage will result in further new engine parts and more penalties during the French weekend.
The Ferrari driver, who is fourth in the championship, will therefore go down a minimum 10 places on the grid, but the Maranello team will most likely decide to change more elements than just his Control Electronics.
Elsewhere, Mercedes have chosen to run a few new components to the W13s of both George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, with Hamilton notably taking on a new turbo, MGU-H, energy store and control electronics. But the Mercedes driver are not facing a grid penalty, given the fact that none of the changes exceed the permitted component usage for the current F1 season.

Ferrari’s title rivals Red Bull are also making some minor changes: both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez are taking their fourth new exhaust system of eight permitted for the 2022 Formula 1 championship.
